E

Luigi Valadier (?), Silver cafetière, c. 1785, graphite, pen, brown ink, brown and grey wash on paper, 115 x 75 mm.

The masks adorning the handles are similar in both shape and position to those on the handles of a silver cafetière in the Odescalchi set that Giuseppe made c. 1795-8 (González-Palacios 2018, p. 471, fig. 10_11). A cafetière identical to the Odescalchi piece but in silver gilt with the hallmarks of the Apostolic Chamber for 1801–3, was recently put up for auction by Wannenes in Genoa. A third silver cafetière with the same ornamental motif on the handles is now in a private collection. We cannot rule out the possibility that Giuseppe may have borrowed certain designs from his father Luigi.
