The Borghese manuscripts in the Vatican’s Secret Archive (Archivio Borghese, 5275; see González-Palacios 2018, p. 120, note 30) include a request for payment, addressed to Prince Marcantanio Borghese by Luigi Valadier on 15 March 1770, for “a four-light oil lamp all in shaped, decorated and chased silver, with a handle emulating classical consular fasces. The four spouts are in the shape of ships’ prows of the kind seen on ancient rostral columns”.
The drawing is the design for an oil lamp made for Marcantonio Borghese but as yet untraced.
