Firmata al centro in basso Benedictus Marinus Urbinas Ping. 1617, l’opera raffigura l’episodio evangelico che narra il ritorno dalla Fuga in Egitto con la Sacra Famiglia che si tiene per mano in uno scenario naturalistico, incorniciato da cortine rette da putti alati. AI lati figurano i due Santi Caterina d’Alessandria e Francesco d’Assisi.
Anna Colombi Ferretti riguardo all’opera scrive che:
E’ un teatrino dove Santa Caterina e San Francesco contemplano – e mediano nei confronti di chi guarda – una scena che appare dal sipario aperto, in cui il tono di serena quotidianità dà l’idea quasi di una semplice passeggiata. Gli apparati di finzione, ancora di aristocratica e mentale ascendenza manieristica, sono piegati ad un uso che volge al popolare.
Benedetto Marini si dimostra anche in questo caso capace di realizzare una composizione equilibrata, con un’attenzione figurativa che se anche ha origine nel Manierismo, è comunque rivolta alla cultura della Controriforma: vi è la necessitò infatti di descrivere vicende della vita quotidiana con un linguaggio popolare, reso in questo caso evidente dalla finzione del teatrino.

Signed at the bottom in the centre: “Benedictus Marinus Urbinas Ping. 1617“, this work represents the Gospel episode of the Holy Family’s return after the flight to Egypt; they are holding hands in a naturalistic setting, framed by a curtain supported on the sides by winged putti, To the sides the two saints: Catherine of Alexandria and Francis of Assisi. «It’s a small theatre – wrote Anna Colombi Ferretti – where St. Catherine and St. Francis contemplate – and mediate for the viewer – a scene that appears behind the opened curtain, where the serene tone of the quotidian gives the idea of a simple outing. The fictional artifices, which still evoke an aristocratic and intellectual Manneristic ancestry, are moulded to lend a popular appeal», concluded Anna Colombi Ferretti.
Even in this work, Benedetto Marini demonstrates his ability to create a balanced composition, with a figurative capacity that, although it originated in Mannerism, in any case was aware of the culture of the Counter-Reformation, with its penchant to describe everyday life in a popular idiom and, in some way, made evident in the case in question by the pretence of the theatre, with reference to the Baroque.
