Behind Jesus and his jailer, who is pulling on a rope tied around his neck, we see two onlookers who may possibly be Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea, the two men who were to bury Christ after his death.<\/p>\n<p>Works of this kind were designed for private devotion and were intended to stir the emotions of the faithful.<\/p>\n<p>Marco Palmezzano replicated the theme of <em>Christ Carrying the Cross<\/em> on several different occasions, testifying to the popularity of this kind of image in Romagna in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Other painters of his generation also turned their hand to the theme, producing very similar compositions.
