The figure is set in a polylobate arch against a bright red background, a composition to which Catarino turned in several other paintings such as those in the Museo di Palazzo Venezia in Rome or in the church of San Francesco della Vigna in Venice. The figures are enhanced by the rays of golden light that contrast with the background. The panel was first attributed to Catarino by Francesca Flores D\u2019Arcais (1965) but several scholars have questioned her attribution, highlighting the painter\u2019s unsure hand in drawing the Christ Child\u2019s arm and the foreshortening of his feet.
