At the time the Ospedale depended on Santa Maria Nuova, Florence\u2019s leading hospital then under the direction of Bishop Leonardo Buonaf\u00e8 (?\u20131545) who, in addition to being a powerful hospital supervisor, was also a self-confessed art lover.
