The painting was restored by the Opificio delle Pietre Dure, with the support of Arter\u00eca, during the years 2024-2026.<\/p>\n
Beneath a classicising loggia, the Virgin Mary is reading a prayer book when she is visited by the Archangel Gabriel, shown kneeling in the centre of the composition. Offering her a bunch of lilies symbolising purity, he tells her that she will conceive and give birth to Jesus, the Son of God \u2013 a story told in the Gospel according to St. Luke (Lk 1:26-38). Two angels on the left witness the miraculous event. Upper right, in a golden cloud, we see the hands of God the Father sending Mary a dove symbolising the Holy Ghost. The neat garden bordered by a low wall reminds the observer of Mary\u2019s unspoilt virginity.<\/p>\n
The painting once graced the church of San Pietro a Fossolo outside Faenza, originally an oratory dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Annunciate and situated in an area belonging to the Manfredi family, lords of the city of Faenza.
